Skills Tutor

May 18-22

This week we will be in the computer lab using Smart Notebook and Smart Ideas to create interactive presentations. Students will work on these presentations in class. This activity is to give students more experience using the technology at school and allow them to reflect on what they've learned this year. There is no homework this week. Have a nice summer.

May 12-16

Monday- Students have a new packet for this week. We will not be doing every problem/ activity in it. But we will do selected  problem solving activities through out the week. There is no homework this week. Just please your packet to class daily! Today we worked on symmetry, design using polygons and analyzing patterns.
Thanks

Tuesday- Students had individual assignments on skills tutor. No Hw

Wednesday- Students worked in their packets today. Skills reviewed were Problem Solving, Reading Comprehension of Word problems, Time, Metric and Customary Units of Measure, and Fractions.

No HW

Thursday- Individual Skills  Tutor and multiplication skills, No HW

Friday- Completion of packet work. No HW

May 4-May8

This week we will be going to the Lab and doing Skills Tutor on Tuesday and Thursday to make sure we don't forget everything we learned this year!

In class on M, W and Friday student have a packst of "Math Essentials" and other math worksheets that will remediate and enhance mathematics skills. We will work on those pages at our own pace in class. Since students will will complete pages at different times, it is important to help your child pace themselves so that it is all complete by Friday. Periodic checks to monitor completion will be made, but the packet will be graded all at one time.

Homewok each night this week is to work on your packet. The completed packet will be due on Friday.

There will be no Homework Friday night unless your packet is incomplete. Then you will need to work on it for a late grade.

Have a great week!!

April 27-May 1

Monday-no class
Tuesday- Review multiplying by a decimal. Class work is Worktext page 65. Complete for HW if you do not finish in class.

Wednesday- we worked on 2x2 and 2x3 digit multiplication of decimals today. Homework was individually given to each student based on accuracy, performance, etc. in class today. Some needed to complete 2-4 problems, some just needed to check their work and decimal placement. Quiz Friday.

Thursday- HW make up five math problems that involve a decimalbeing multiplied by another number. Example: 12.3 x .2    Quiz tomorrow over 2 and 3 digit number being multiplied by a one digit number.

Friday- Quiz over multiplying  decimals.

April 13-17 and April 20-24

Hi Parents! For the next two weeks we will be reviewing the skills we have learned this year and practice test taking strategies for the upcoming CRCT. I am not assigning any graded homework over the next two weeks in order to give your student the time to individually prepare for CRCTs. I encourage all students to review the videos and activities on the my.hrw.com website and complete lessons on Skills Tutor to prepare. Another great way to assist your student with math facts and learning is to play math games, practice times tables on www.multiplication.com and to allow your student to watch you/ help you use math in a real world manner. Having your student make change, keep track of time, use measuring instruments in the kitchen, and solve real life money word problems ( I only have $5, so how many cheeseburgers can we get if they are 1.50 each?) are fantastic ways to get them thinking critically. Below are the concepts/ topics we covered this year to help you.

Data Analysis (Histograms, Bar graphs, circle graphs, etc.)
fractions, mixed numbers,
converting fractions to decimals to percents
one step equations with whole numbers, fractions and decimals (No Negatives)
Order of Operations with Whole numbers, fractions and decimals
Direct Variations
Probability

March 30-April 3

Monday- I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend! We would like to extend a VERY special "Thank You" to a thoughtful parent who donated paper to our classroom. You are very appreciated!

Last week we worked on IDENTIFYING different examples of Direct Variation: graphs, tables and in equations. This week we will work on SOLVING more of them. Our focus will be 1) Solving for the Constant of Proportionality (K) when given a Table, and then 2) writing the equation. There will be a quiz on Thursday. If it goes well, great, if not we will re-quiz on Friday. Homework tonight is to problems 9,10,11,and 12 on the Direct VARIATION WORKSHEET.. Here is an example:

If x=20 and y=10, solve for the Constant of Proportionality (Solve for K)

1. Write the formula     Y=kX

2. Substitute the known values:     10=k(20)

3. Solve for K             10/20=1/2         K=1/2

4. WRITE the answer for k into an EQUATION:    Y=1/2 X    <------------final answer

You read that as "Y equals one half of X"
