2009 OLYMPIC WEEK!!!

Parents and students,

The Physical Education and connections department are so excited about next week.  Competition, sportsmanship, and spirit are the themes that surround the week.  Parents, we would love to see you come and support your student by watching him/her in competition.  Students, get geared up because it is going to be a great note to go out on for spring break.  I have attached the schedule for the week.

Dance Contest '09

This Friday, January 16th (my birthday), we will hold the 2009 Dance Contest.  The students will take what they have learned in the Dance Unit and choreograph their own dance routine.  They will perform it in front of their grade level as well as the administrative team.  Parents are also welcome to attend!  Ask your student what time they have Physical Education and that will be the time they will perform.  We look forward to seeing you there!

YEARBOOK SALES, LAST CALL!!!

This will be the final week for yearbook sales. The price will be $35. You may send money to the school and put it in the safe through Friday, December 5th or order online through Sunday, December 7th. Absolutely NO SALES will be accepted after these dates.

Attention 6th and 8th Grade Parents!!!

Your student received a Scoliosis letter today (11/7) that is very important.  It gives you information on our Scoliosis screening this year.  It will be held 11/20 - 11/21.  All 6th and 8th grade students are required by law to be screened.  If you would not like your child to be screened, be sure and sign the letter and have your student give it to Mrs. Poole or me.  If your child does not bring back the letter signed, he/she will be screened on the above dates.  If the letter has been misplaced, please click the link below to download and print.  Thanks for your cooperation in this matter.

2nd 9 Weeks Activities

We have a lot of great units planned for this nine week period.  Also, expect for your child to run the mile every two weeks as we are trying to improve their cardiovascular endurance for the upcoming Fitnessgram Post Assessment.  I have attached the schedule for activities.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

We need YOUR help!

On November 20-21, we are doing our annual Scoliosis testing for 6th and 8th grade students.  In order for us to complete the screening in two days, we need help from the community.  We need nurses who would be willing to volunteer to help us screen students for Scoliosis.  If you know anyone who is a nurse and could possibly help us out, please contact me in some way.  Thank you!

Writing Assignment 10/15/08

Because today is early release, we took advantage of the little class time we had.  We assigned a writing assignment.  The students answered the following question in one paragraph:  What are you doing outside of P.E. to improve your fitness?  Please give examples and explain why that particular activity improves your fitness.

If your student was absent, they will have three days to turn it in to me.  All other students finished it in class so it will not take very long.

Fitnessgram Report Cards

Parents,

As most of you know, your students have taken part in a Fitnessgram test last nine weeks. We have entered their scores into our Fitnessgram software. Along with receiving their regular report cards, they will also get a Fitnessgram report card. This report card will not only show their scores, it will also let them know where they stand based on the criteria for their age group. In addition, the report card will also give them tips on how they can improve their fitness. They have also set goals to improve their fitness. Will you please have conversation with them about their goals and encourage them as they seek a higher level of fitness? Studies show that the habits they form in adolescence will carry on into adulthood. Thank you for your support!

Mile Run Thursday

F.Y.I.  We will be running the mile on Thursday October 9th.  We always try to run it at least once per nine weeks so that the students can get additional feedback on their cardiovascular fitness.  Please make sure that if your student has asthma that he/she brings an inhaler.  Also, students are welcome to bring a water bottle to drink after they are done.

Fitness Fun!

From now until Monday, September 29th my class will be enjoying the early fall breeze while we play Rugby (6th) and Flag Football(7th and 8th).  They have been taught the rules and how the game is played.  It is now their turn to get in there and do it.  All of my students have been told that these should be games that improve Cardiovascular Fitness.  If I feel as if they are not improving their fitness, they will not get full credit for that day.  I hope they can begin to learn that fitness is fun!
