Turnover at the top...

Mrs. Orlando will be taking over the Environmental Club this year.  She has a lot of new ideas and information to get out there.   Her husband has been a regular visitor to the school talking about Environmental causes and they were instrumental at getting the EPA's Change a Light Bulb bus to our school last year.   Look for updates here on the website for the first meeting.

Electronics and Appliance Recycling Day

We are having an electronics and appliance recycling at Durham Middle School on Saturday, May 10th from 8 AM to 4 PM.  You will be able to bring up any used electronics or appliances and we will have them recycled for you.  We will be asking for donations that the club will use to improve energy and water efficiency at the school.

The following are just some of the items that will be accepted:

TVs, VCRs, DVDs, Power Tools, Appliances, Bikes, Motors, Air Conditioners, Computers, Monitors, Water Heaters, Washers, Dryers....pretty much everything!

Excellent job guys!

Welcome Back

Environmental Club will meet this Friday, Jan. 11.   We will be talking about things we can do.  Bring ideas.   We will do paper recycling next Friday, Jan 18.

Friday Meeting

The Durham Environmental Club is off to a good start.   We meet every Friday in Mr. Sinco’s room (347) at 8:00 AM.   We are currently working on classroom paper recycling and collecting bins/boxes to place in each teacher’s room.   Once we get all the bins/boxes that we need, we will distribute them to each teacher.   I suspect that we will be ready to do that this Friday!    After we add paper recycling to the already in place plastic recycling, we will focus next on recycling of aluminum cans from the lunchroom.   Hopefully, we will have the total recycling program ready by the winter holidays.   When we come back from the break, we will focus more on other aspects of how we can help our local environment.

Recycling Bins

After calling the recycling company, I found out that the Frey Newspaper Recycling Bin can also take classroom paper, office paper, and junk mail.   Additionally, the Magazine Dump Bin next to it recycles phone books and catalogs (in addition to magazines).    Therefore, you can drop off cans, paper, magazines, newspapers, phonebooks, and catalogs all in one place.   We are also looking at getting a plastic bottle recycling drop bin as well.

WSB-TV

Durham, because of its involvement in the Change-A-Light tour, was nominated by one of our students, Tyler Keegan,  to WSB-TV and we have been chosen as one of WSB's "Going Green Champions".  They came and filmed a short piece which hopefully will air around 7:45 AM on Saturday, Dec. 1st and again on the Sunday night news during the 6PM newscasts (12/2).  Students included in the filming participated in the event and/or in our new Environmental Club.

Next Meeting

We will meet on Friday, the last day of November.   We will continue to distribute boxes for paper and talk about additional things we can do.  8:00 in Mr. Sinco's room....see you there.

Welcome to the Environmental Club

"We can all be better stewards"

Mission:
1) Help Improve Durham's Environment - whether this means cleaning up school grounds or finding less polluting ways to do things, we strive to do our best to be good citizens for the earth.

2) Improve Energy Efficiency - we will be looking for best practices to reduce our energy consumption at Durham and in our own homes.   First project is going to be an incandescent light bulb hunt.

3) Organize and Staff Durham's Recycling Efforts - We have started out with plastic bottle recycling.  We need to raise awareness of these bins.   Next up will be paper recycling.   We are in the process of trying to find suitable containers to be placed in the classrooms to collect the paper.

4) Raise Student Awareness - Let's get the word out about our efforts at the school through posters, announcements, and special presentations.

5) Effect Governmental Policies on the Environment - School Board, County Commission, State Legislature, and Governor's Office - We have a voice, let's use it.

Next meeting - Friday, November 16th at 8:15 am in Mr. Sinco's room
