Parents, it is time to send in a self-addressed stamped envelope (with 2 stamps) to your child'd home room teacher so that we may mail home your child's final report card.

Final Daily Grammar Practice Quiz #14 is set for Thursday, May 15th. AC students should review DGP Sentences #37-38. On-Level students should review DGP Sentences #27-28.

The Lyddie Book Review is due on Thursday, May 15th. Extra Credit (+5) points will be added for submitting the book review Wednesday.

The Lyddie Test covering the entire novel will be Thursday, May 15th. The test questions are a combination of matching, true-false, and multiple choice.

On-Level Classwork Blocks 1,2,and 7:

I checked for completed chapter summaries for chapters 12-14 and 15-17. Students, who finished chapter 17, completed the comprehension check for chapters 15-16-17. Students continued their silent reading.

On-Level Homework:

Students have a ten character chart to complete by writing two sentences to describe each character. Students should also review sentences #27-28 for the DGP Quiz #14. Students should begin drafting their book review. Scroll back to Friday's blog to find a link to download the directions for the book review as well as a sample of a book review.

AC Classwork Blocks 3 and 6:

Students continued their silent reading of Lyddie. I checked for completed chapter summaries from chapters 12-14 and 15-17. Students, who completed chapter 17, completed the comprehension check for chapters 15-17. A few students used the laptops to work on their independent research which coincided with their reading of Lyddie. The presentation utilizes either power point or Smart Ideas to showcase the relationship between the student's chosen topic and the storyline of the novel Lyddie.

AC Homework:

Students have a ten character chart to complete by writing two sentences to describe each character. Students should also review sentences #37-38 for the DGP Quiz #14. Students should begin drafting their book review if they have not already done so. Some students have already submitted their book review. Students, who submit their book review tomorrow, receive an extra 5 points for early submission.    Scroll back to Friday's blog to find a link to download the directions for the book review as well as a sample of a book review.

Sixth Grade students participated in a Mock Writing Test this morning. The students followed the same procedures as the 8th Grade Writing Assessment. Ths students were given 100 minutes to follow the steps of the writing process to produce a quality expository or persuasive essay on a topic they had never seen before. 

Thursday, May 15th, is the date for the final Daily Grammar Practice Quiz #14 for both AC and On-Level students. AC students will review Sentences #37-38,  while On-Level students will review Sentences #27-28.

The Book Review for Lyddie is due Thursday, May 15th. Check Friday's blog for a link to download the directions and a sample book review.

AC students for their book review must add a fourth part beyond the listing for On-Level. AC students must compare Lyddie to another character from a movie, book, or TV show.

On-Level Classwork Blocks 1,2,7:

The book review may be typed or handwritten  with black or blue ink.   

Block 7 did not meet today due to change in scheduld because of the Mock Writing Test.

Students should continue reading chapters from Lyddie if they checked out a book from me or begin composing their book review of Lyddie using their chapter summaries to support their conclusion as to the theme of the novel. The book review is due Thursday.

Students continued their silent reading of chapters from Lyddie. I checked for completed chapter summaries for chapters 12-13-14. Students were expected to read chapters 15-16-17 today. Students, who completed chapter 17, could go ahead and take the comprehension check for chapters 15-16-17, which is multiple choice questions. The rest will answer the questions on Tuesday.

Block 6 did not meet today due to the change in schedule for the Mock Writing Test.

Parents, the students will participate in a Mock Writing Test on Monday,May 12th. This test will cover the proper use of the writing process to compose a quality piece of writing. Students will need pencils for prewriting and drafting and a blue or black ink pen for the final copy. The results of this Mock Writing Test will be forwarded to the 7th Grade Language Arts teachers.

Students will choose one of three options for their journal entry in their composition book. Download journal_21.ppt  Homework will be graded based on the effort shown in their writing to fully explain their chosen  topic.

Students identified and labeled the sentence parts for this week's Daily Grammar Practice Sentence #28: I will take chips to the party, but Tara will take brownies with nuts. The students identified two simple subjects, two complete subjects, two simple predicates, two complete predicates, two direct objects, two prepositional phrases, and two objects of the preposition.

Students read silently for a while. We used the directed reading questions posted on the SmartBoard to review chapters 9-10-11. Then students read silently for the remainder of the period.

Comprehension Check-Up for chapters 9-11using the Senteo Response System was postponed until Wednesday so that every student could finish chapter 11 either during class, overnight, or during home room tomorrow.

Today is Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day!

Parents, check the attached agenda and compare it to the one in your child's agenda so that you know what he/she is doing in class each day. Download may_5_2008.ppt 

*Students may check out a Lyddie book overnight to catch up on their silent reading. Books are checked out on a "first come, first served" basis at 4:10p.m. each day. Students promise to return the book to me at the beginning of home room the next day, 8:50a.m.* We only have a class set of books. There are not enough books for every student to bring one home.

I returned the comprehension check for chapters 6-7-8 while the students were reading silently. This check up is on a 1/2 sheet of paper.

The next comprehension check-up will be after chapter 11. This should occur on Tuesday if the students stay on schedule with their reading.

If a student falls behind in their reading, they can borrow a book during home room and check out a book overnight to catch up with their assigned reading.

On-Level Homework:

There is no written homework. Students should review their chapter summaries to keep up with the plot and characters as the story unfolds.

Classwork On-Level Blocks 1,2 and 7:

Students completed their reading through chapter 8 of Lyddie  and finished composing their summary paragraph for chapter 8.

Students then answered a quick 10 short answer questions covering chapters 6-7-8. I will grade the answers for accuracy counting it as class grade for Lyddie.

Students continued their silent reading starting with chapter 9. We are scheduled for another reading check-up for comprehension on Monday covering chapters 9-10-11. I will be spot checking composition books for summaries for chapters 7-8,9-10 during class Monday. Students are expected to read at their pace. Students may read beyond the assigned chapters. As each chapter is completed, students will stop and write a short summary paragraph. 

Classwork AC Blocks 3 and 6:

Students continued their silent reading of the novel Lyddie. Students completed a short answer 10 questions comprehension check-up covering chapters 6-7-8 today. I will grade the questions for accuracy and count it as a class grade for Lyddie.

Parents, I collected signed progress reports from the students. Your child must return a progress report with your signature Friday or receive consequences of silent lunch and points off CAT Card for "not following directions".

Homework Tonight:

Each student must have written a summary paragraph for chapter 7 of Lyddie. Some students read and created a summary for chapter 8 as well. Check your child's compostion book for their paragraphs. The comprehension check Friday covers chapters 6-7-8.

Classwork Blocks 1 and 2:

Students identified and labeled the clauses, the sentence type, and the sentence purpose for Daily Grammar Practice Sentence #27: When you come to my house, we can jump on my trampoline. Students also rewrote the sentence correctly following all punctuation and capitalization rules.

Students read chapter 7 and wrote a short summary of events in their Composition Book. Some students also read chapter 8 and recorded a summary for that chapter as well. 

There will be a comprehension check for chapters 6-7-8 on Friday.

Students also rewrote the sentence correctly following all punctuation and capitalization rules.

Student read chapter 7 and wrote a short summary of events. Students were also expected to read chapters 8-9 and write a summmary paragraph for each chapters. The Comprehension Check Friday covers chapters 6-7-8. Students may complete summary paragraph #9 in class Friday. Students are to write their summary paragraphs in their Composition Book. 

Block 7 Classwork:

Students identified and labeled the clauses, the sentence type, and the sentence purpose for Daily Grammar Practice Sentence #27: When you come to my house, we can jump on my trampoline. Students also rewrote the sentence correctly following all punctuation and capitalization rules.

We read chapter 6 aloud and created a character profile for Ezekial Abernathy. Students were to read chapter 7 and 8 silently and write a summary paragraph in their Composition Book for each chapter. There will be a comprehension check for chapters 6-7-8 on Friday.

I posted on the SmartBoard some directed reading questions for chapters 7-8. Students may use them to guide their reading of chapters 7-8. They are not required to answer the directed reading questions. They are required to compose a summary paragraph containing the main events from each chapter. I will check periodically without warning to see if students are in fact writing a paragraph after each chapter is read.

Students received short summary paragraphs for chapters 1-6. This is a model for the summary paragraphs the students will be writing for chapters 7 and beyond. Students will be reading chapters 7-8-9 and writing a summary for each completed chapter Thursday.
