Announcements:

CRCT begins Tuesday, April 21st and runs through Monday, April 27th. Students will need regular #2 pencils. No mechanical pencils are allowed to mark answers in the answer sheet.

Students will have an adjusted shedule during the testing days. Students may have a snack during the 10 minute break between the two sections each day.

Students will need a regular #2 pencil for tomorrow's CRCT practice test.

Homework:

Tonight's homework is to bring regular #2 pencils to school Friday and leave them in your locker for the CRCT next week.

Classwork:

Blocks 3-5 rewrote this week's Daily Grammar Practice sentence #28 correctly following all rules for capitalization and punctuation: I will take chips to the party, but Tara will take brownies with nuts.

Blocks 6-7 rewrote their DGP sentence #31 correctly following all capitalization and punctuation rules: Since we have unusual circumstances, we will not have our test today, but we will have our test tomorrow.

Students in Blocks 3-7 continued their preparation for the CRCT by reviewing selected items from their CRCT pretest.

Students differentiated between a word used as an adjective or an adverb by by completing exercise #19 on page 343.

Friday, students take a CRCT posttest similar to their pretest. Students will be able to measure their growth and preparation for the real CRCT next week.

I appreciate your patience with my blog posting. I have had daily problems with my TypePad account. I hope to switch to another format this week.

CRCT starts next week on Tuesday and runs through Monday, the 20th. Students will need rest and sharpened #2 pencils to do their best on each test.

In Blocks 3-5, we checked last night's homework for completion. Students completed exercise #6, #1-10 using a chart provided in class. Students practiced identifying proper adjectives and the proper spelling for adjectives created from proper nouns. Students completed exercise #4 on page 334 in their Writing and Grammar textbook. Students began exercise 5 on page 335.

In blocks 6-7, we checked last night's homework for completion. Students completed exercise #4 on page 334 in their Writing and Grammar textbook.We will check the answers on Wednesday. Students composed a journal entry explaining their opinion to a given situation. Students will complete exercise #6 on page 337 in class Wednesday.

Announcements:

Today is April Fool's Day!

Today we completed day #3 of the Durham Olympics.

Students completed Daily Grammar Practice Quiz #13. Scores will be posted as soon as possible.

Homework:

There is no official homework assignment tonight. However, some students must finish their compare and contrast blog writing tonight for homework.

Classwork:

Students in Blocks 3-7 answered a math word problem as the warm-up activity.

Students in Blocks 3-7 completed their Daily Grammar Practice Quiz #13 today.

Students in Blocks 3-5 checked their answers to the pre-assessment on adjectives and adverbs from page 329 in the Writing and Grammar textbook. Students in Blocks 6-7 will do so on Thursday.

Students in Blocks 5-7 worked to finish their compare and contrast blog writing.

Students, who finished their classwork, began free writing time. Each student chooses the topic, the format, and the length of their writing. The writing could be narrative, expository,or persuasive.

Announcements:

Test on Pronouns is tomorrow, Friday, March 27th.

Durham Olympics begins Monday with the Opening Ceremony starting at 9:25 A.M.

Homework:

Students should review the six types of pronouns and be able to name the antecedent. Students should be able to recognize the case and person for personal pronouns. Pronouns are either first person, second person, or third person. There are three cases for pronouns:nomminative, objective, and possessive.

Classwork:

Students in Blocks 3-5 identified and labeled the clauses, sentence type, and sentence purpose for this week's DGP sentence #26: I like the book Sounder, but Guido prefers Where the Red Fern Grows

I checked completion of the graphic organizer, shopping for two items, which was first assigned last Friday.

Blocks 3-4 began wriiting their blog- style review in class today. Others will finish after the pronoun test Friday.

Block 5 played a review game on pronouns, naming the pronoun, the type, and the antecedent if available. Block 5 will write their blog review of the two products after the pronoun test Friday.

Blocks 6-7 added a third sentence to the story: The meteor, illuminating the night sky with a growing pulse, was shining as brightly as the sun. Students identified parts of speech, sentence parts, as well as clauses, sentence type, and sentence purpose.

Block 6 started the review game, but it was interrupted by the Academic Excellence Party.

Block 7 played the review game after DGP. Students will write their blog review in class on Friday.

Announcements:

Graphic Organizer distributed last Friday is due tomorrow, Thursday, March 26th.

Test on Pronouns is set for Friday, March 27th.

Durham Olympics begins Monday, March 30th with Opening Ceremony in the morning at 9:25 A.M.

6th grade events will begin immediately after the Opening Ceremony.

Homework:

Students should complete the graphic organizer with 5 similarities and 5 differences between the two chosen items. We will complete the reverse side in class Thursday.

Classwork:

Students in Blocks 3-7 solved a word problem as their warm-up. The challenge was to determine the best way to come up with the correct answer.

Students in Blocks 3-7 completed a Senteo check-up on their knowledge of pronouns. Students answered 15 questions similar to the ones on Friday's test. We reviewed the questions that were missed by most students.

Students ended the period classifying pronouns used in given sentences, Pronoun Use Investigations (PUI).

Students in Blocks 6-7, who did well on the check-up, formed groups of three and four to write three sentences and rotate papers. Students will continue to write and rotate papers until the paragraph or story is complete. The only conditions are that the composition must contain all the types of pronouns and a personal pronoun can not be repeated or used twice.

Thursday, students will write their blog based on their research detailed on the graphic organizer in class. After the blog posting, students will return to practicing for the pronoun test on Friday.

Graphic Organizer for compare/contrast was distributed last Friday and is due on Thursday, March 26th.

Homework:

Continue researching your two items and completing the graphic organizer with 5 similarities and 5 differences. We will do the blog portion in class on Thursday.

Students in Blocks 6-7 are required to complete the  Daily Grammar Practice warm-up at their own pace. Each day the students receive one new sentence to identify parts of speech, sentence parts, as well as clauses, sentence type, and sentence purpose. Check your child's compostition notebook for the sentences. Next week's quiz will cover the basics of all the sentences.

Students in Blocks 3-7 completed a seek and find puzzle identifying three types of pronouns. This activity will be graded for accuracy.

Students began exercise 16 on page 530 in their Writing and Grammar textbook. Students must determine whether or not the pronoun and the antecedent agree as singular or plural.

Students were introduced to Pronoun Use Investigations. Students created 4 columns: Pronoun, Type, Case, and Person. Students must classify each pronoun according to its type and use. 

Students listed the underlined pronoun in the first column and filled in column #2 type. Only if the pronoun is a personal pronoun do you complete columns three and four.

We are treating this activity as test prep for Friday's test on pronouns. We will continue this activity Wednesday in class. You can check your child's language arts folder for the paper Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Announcements:

Scores for the latest DGP Quiz are now posted for viewing on I-Parent. Students received the papers today in class.

Durham Olympics begins Monday, March 30th with the Opening Ceremony starting at 9:25 A.M. Events for 6th graders will begin immediately after the Opening Ceremony. Class schedule will be different during Olympic Week.

Graphic Organizer completed by researching two items is due Thursday, March 26th. Students will write up their findings in class.

Test on Pronouns is set for Friday, March 27th.

Announcements:

Report cards were distributed Thursday afternoon. I must have a signature to verify receipt of report card.

Students received a graphic organizer to complete by Thursday, March 26th. Students will research two items to compare and contrast.  The writing portion will be completed in class.  

Wildcat Tutoring Team offers extra help every morning starting at 7:50 A.M.

The test on pronouns  is set for Friday, March 27th. There are six types of pronouns on the test.

Homework:

Students research two items and complete the graphic organizer with 5 similarities and 5 differences by Thursday, March 26th. Students may read advertisements or go into stores to collect their data.

Classwork:

Students in Blocks 3-5 diagrammed this week's Daily Grammar Practice sentence #25:I walked to school because I missed the bus.

Students in Blocks 6-7 diagrammed their DGP sentence #30:Mrs. Fugate, our Spanish teacher, is nice, so we will have a party on Friday.

I checked for completion of last night's homework, workbook page 11, exercises 1 and 2.

Students completed identifying the antecedent for each pronoun that they used in their "Going Green"  paragraph. This paragraph was started in class Tuesday and was to be finished for homework Wednesday night. I collected the paragraph from students as they finished.

I collected the summary paragraph on pronouns that the students started in class Thursday. Students created the summary showcasing their knowledge of pronnouns after the pronoun power point.

Students worked to identify demonstrative pronouns and their antecedent by completing exercises 17-18 on pages 304-305 in their Writing and Grammar textbook.

Students will practice recognizing indefinite pronouns on Monday.

Report Cards were distributed to each child this afternoon. Each student has an orange strip stapled into their agenda for parent signature. There is no need to return the actual report card if you sign the orange slip in the agenda.

A test on  all types of pronouns is set for Friday, March 27.

Students in Blocks 3-7 copied notes from a power point showcasing the six types of pronouns. I expected that every student would take at least six notes.

Students then used their notes to write a summary paragraph explaining what they know and/or learned about pronouns from the power point.

Finally, students identified by circling or underlining at least ten pronouns in their "Green" paragraph, which was started in class on Tuesday and was to be completed for homework last night. Students identified and labeled the antecedent for their ten pronouns. 

I will collect both the summary paragraph and the "Green"  paragraph during class on Friday.
